WELCOME TO THE ARIZONA STATE RANKINGS

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT

Attention All Teams,

Thank you for your continued support of the AZBN State Rankings. After careful consideration, the following changes and additions are going to be implemented, effective immediately.

• There will now be two seasons of AZBN State Rankings. Season number one will begin August 1 and will conclude December 31. On January 1, all dials will be turned back to 0 and a new season will begin, and thus will conclude May 31.

• State Ranking points will not be calculated in June and July.

• With this change, all teams will have two chances within a year to be crowned a State Champion.

• Rules for the 9U through 14U Rankings will remain in as is.

• We have partnered with Jeff Forney of Triple Threat, Inc.. to provide a very special award for each season crowned champion from each age division. Winners from each division will receive an hour and half personal team training session at the Triple Threat facility in Chandler under Jeff's oversight. This is not a hitting cage. It is a baseball training facility. A former first round draft pick, assistant hitting/base running coach at Notre Dame and ASU, and host of the TV show, Baseball Player University . . . Jeff has just completed a new book called, Beyond Nine Innings. Jeff specializes in hitting with a focus on speed, power, and agility development. His facility houses some of the very latest in baseball training technology that will truly help you get your team to the next level.

• At the conclusion of each Ranking Season, AZBN will provide you, the team coach of the crowned champion, with the necessary information needed to set up your personal team training session. Jeff will be expecting your call to set up time with your team.

Again, I want to thank each and every team for your continued support of AZBN. We are glad to be able to provide you with a substantial award in recognition for your dedicated play on the field.

AZBN

While no ranking system is perfect, we do believe that our system (aka 'work in progress') offers a methodology that is straightforward and forthright, minus the politics and the popularity contests.

IMPORTANT: In order to receive points for your team's finish in any of the approved sanctioned organizations below, you MUST register your team's name exactly the same way for each tourney entered. If you have the state or city name as part of your team's name, it must ALWAYS be included. For instance, if your registered team name is AZ PowerPak but you choose to register in a tournament as the PowerPak or the Pak, you will receive points as if these were three different teams. We cannot go back and combine points once awarded. Coaches and team parents who do not register consistently will be jeopardizing team points. AZBN desires that all teams receive their reward for their hard-earned work, but we do not possess the man power to go back and research hundreds of teams to determine who registered what and when.

HOW IT WORKS

Each team is eligible for points for one tournament a month. If a team plays in more than one tournament a month, their top finish will be used to determine a team's total points. There will be no credit for extra tournaments played. NOTE: Tournaments that begin at the end of a month and conclude at the beginning of a month (e.g. A three day tournament that begins on November 29 and ends December 1) will be credited to the month in which that tournament concluded. The above example would mean the points would be considered for December, not November.

Each team is eligible for points for up to ten tournaments a year including National Championships. If a team plays in more than ten tournaments in a year, their top ten finishes will be used to determine a team's total points. Those ten tournaments must have been played in ten different months except for a national tournament which may be included in the same month as another tournament.

If a team competes in an older division in a particular tournament and earns points, those points will follow the team back down to their normal age division. They will also receive one extra bonus point for playing up.

Points are earned for 1st through 4th place finishes in nationally sanctioned tournaments. Currently the following sanctioning bodies recognized by AZBN are:

AAU - Amateur Athletic Union
CABA - Continental Amateur Baseball Association

NBB - Nations Baseball
SSBA - Super Series Baseball of America
TCS - Triple Crown Sports
USSSA - Unites States Specialty Sports Association
USTSA - United States Travel Sports Association

SPECIAL NOTE

The 9U division will receive Upper Division points unless there are two divisions offered in a tournament. This is due to the low number of tournaments offered throughout the year as well as the small number of 9U teams competing. Note also new in 2007/2008, tournaments where three or more 9U teams compete will be eligible for middle of the road points, again for the same reasons as described above.

DETAILED EXPLANATION

Points are tallied after each sanctioned tournament. The team with the most accumulated points will be ranked 1st in the state.

All tournament finishes are submitted to AZBN by the sanctioning bodies. Any discrepancies with finishes should be directed to the tournament organization and not to AZBN. Out of state teams are not listed in our ranking system. Points earned by an out of state team are taken out of the formula. They are not awarded to the next Arizona team in line (e.g. If your team finishes 3rd while an out of state finishes 2nd, you will still be awarded third place finish points).

If a team participates in an out of state tournament and finishes in the top four of their division, they are eligible to receive points provided the team submits to AZBN a website link where AZBN may verify the tournament results. They are also eligible to receive bonus points for 1st place finishes.

Tournaments that are organized, operated and run by 'Invitation Only' (see definition below) - Tournament finishers will be awarded points equivalent to the AAA Lower Division Points System.

DEFINITION: By 'Invitation Only' we do not mean normal First Come First Served limitations by which many of our state tournaments fill up and sell out.  We also do not mean invitational tournaments by which a team must qualify to be eligible.  'Invitation Only' is defined here as an organization choosing to make a tournament known only to a limited number of teams and filling up and running a tournament that way.

Tournaments that are organized, operated and run by Open Entry but can provide only one division - Tournament finishers will be awarded points equivalent to the mid-level ranking, even though their sanctioning body might offer both divisions. AZBN is not bound nor obligated to a national organization's system of ranking.

The Upper Division Points System will awarded only in an open format, whereby a tournament offers top level competition for any team wishing to participate and where two distinct divisions are offered and played in that tournament.

AZBN's commitment is always to act on behalf of all teams involved in Arizona travel team competition.

Teams participating in tournaments where there are less than four teams competing in their division will not be eligible for points for that particular tournament.

In special situations where all teams compete in pool play and the top two seeds play for the upper division and/or middle division while the rest play in the lower division, those two teams in the upper or middle division will be awarded normal points, but will receive no bonus points.

CALENDAR

The ranking calendar is August 1 through July 31. National tournaments that carry over will be considered as a tournament held prior to July 31 provided teams play in that age division.

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS

Other sanctioning bodies may petition AZBN for consideration at any time. AZBN does not use non-sanctioned, irregularly sanctioned or independent tournaments in its ranking process.

If a team disbands, AZBN must be notified by the manager. Once verified, that team shall be removed from the formula.
