I love the game of baseball. In its purest sense, it's a game built on do overs. Strikeouts, blown plays, run away scores, missed signals, bad outings, pitched balls that are missed up in the zone, pick-offs, wild throws, misjudged flies, swing and miss pitches, and the list could go on and on. Sounds pretty negative, huh? But that's baseball. It's a game built on some success and a lot of failure. Think about it . . . if you get a hit three out of ten at bats, you're considered a success. If you strike out the first three times and then hit a walk-off home run to win the game, you're a hero and everyone forgets the K's.
Tied closely to the concept of do overs is the necessity of 'forgetting'. In fact, it's nearly impossible to have a successful do over unless you're able to forget. You've probably heard a coach declare to his players after a lackluster inning that baseball is a game of do overs, or a game of forgetting. "Let's start now." "Everyone hits." "This is our inning." Every at bat, every pitch, every catch, every throw can be the start of something new, leaving the past failures in dust.
This is a great description of what God wants to do with us. God has extended to you and me the chance for a do over in life. He wants you and me to forget the past and look to Him for the future. He doesn't care who we are or where we've come from or what we've had to walk through. He cares about us. And because he cares about us, he's offered each of us the grand opportunity of a fresh start on life. Listen to what the Bible says about his offer, "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!" 2 Corinthians 5:17 (NIV)
So do overs is not just a kid-thing. It can also be a God-thing.
