Lead Off
As a college player with aspirations of getting drafted and hopefully playing pro baseball, my college coach gave me some priceless advice. He said, "Jeff, you are always being evaluated when you are on the field. Play the game as if it were the last game you would ever play”. This advice would stick with me throughout my entire playing career as I was evaluated on a daily basis by scouts, general managers, and coaches.
Today after a playing career that is well over, I can say the biggest impact on my life was not the thrill of the game, or the drive to excel before the men who were watching, though I thought it was at that time. The biggest impact happened well after my playing days ended. It was five years ago when I accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and personal Savior.
Clean Up
Today I still strive for excellence in all I do and I still remember the words of my college coach, "...you are always being evaluated." The evaluators have changed now; they are my wife, kids, friends, and all the people I associate with in this great game of baseball. With evaluators like these I want to make sure I bring them my best game, so in all I do I try my best every day to play for an audience of One . . . Jesus Christ. When I give Him my best, all the other people watching will see my best game.
My challenge to you as players, coaches, and parents; you will always be evaluated in most everything you do. Bring them your best game by playing to the ultimate audience and head coach, Jesus Christ.
"Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men." Colossians 3:23 (NIV)
